No luggage reservation needed
Standard-sized luggage fits easily on the Shinkansen without any extra booking or fees.
Standard bags welcome
Bags up to 160 cm total (height + width + depth) can be brought on board without reservation. This includes typical 23 kg airline checked bags.
Overhead racks
Spacious overhead luggage racks above every row can accommodate carry-on bags and medium-sized suitcases.
Oversized luggage (160-250 cm)
Larger bags require a free reservation for designated luggage space behind the last row of seats.
Eligibility requirements
Eligible for JR Pass
- Non-Japanese passport holders under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor".
- Japanese citizens who have lived abroad for more than 10 consecutive years with a certificate from their local embassy.
Not eligible
- You enter on a student visa.
- You enter on a work visa.
- You are a Japanese citizen and have lived abroad for less than 10 years.
- You enter Japan on any other visa than "Temporary Visitor".
Activate within 90 days
The JR Pass must be activated within 90 days from the order date. Make sure not to order too far in advance as expired vouchers are denied exchange in Japan. We recommend ordering about 4 weeks before departure.
Japanese citizens
Japanese citizens must obtain a certificate from the Japanese Embassy before purchasing. Children can be listed on parents' certificate. All citizens over 12 need their own certificate.

Free seat reservation
Seating can be booked at any JR Desk or with the Shinkansen ticket-machines.
Personal pass
Your rail pass is personal and can only be used by the original user.
Passport required
Your passport and JR Pass is required at all times during travel.
